Think of America’s addiction to oil on the same terms of a heroin addict. I think it’s a fitting analogy, don’t you? Right now we are witnessing before our eyes the failure to contain an disaster in the Gulf, which is the result of our mass consumption and demand for oil. So the most logical course of action would be to do something about it. Right? Invest in renewable energy sources, increase the fuel efficiency of our vehicles, make public transit more accessible. Whatever, but find a suitable method to counteract our dependency on oil home and abroad, so things like this don’t happen again.

If you’re addicted to heroin and experiencing adverse effects to it, then why would you continue to use it? After this BP oil disaster, why on Earth would we risk damaging more of our coasts by continuing to drill for more oil? Let’s think of some alternatives beyond “drill, baby, drill.” Don’t you get it? We’re like the heroin addict who can’t break free from his addiction. How many more of these disasters do we need, before we realize something has to change? There is only so much Earth available to us.
